1. System Requirements

* See the section on Special Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 2003 Server users if you encounter problems installing and running Convea on these operating systems.

2. New Installations

i. Quick overview of the install process.

Convea is installed in two stages. The first stage is a standard windows installer and will extract all Convea files to a folder of your choice. This install folder can be anywhere and does not have to be in WWWROOT, although it should be a folder physically located on the host server and not a mapped drive. It is possible to install over a mapped drive as long as you correctly create a user account on the target server and map using the correct login details, however the exact details are beyond the scope of this document.

The second installation stage involves the running of a configuration wizard. This wizard guides you through the various stages required to configure Convea, such as IIS configuration, the creation and population of the database, and the setup of the Convea Mail Service. Convea can not be manually installed; the configuration wizard registers several components and installs services, as well as generating default files and writing registry information.

ii. Performing the installation.

Run Convea52.exe to start the install program.

When prompted for an installation directory select a folder on your server where the Convea files will be installed. See above notes regarding the install folder.

The next step in the installation is Component Selection. If you are installing Convea for the first time leave all of the components checked. If you are re-installing Convea you can uncheck any components you do not want re-installing.

After setup has completed installing files to your server, check the Launch Convea Configuration Wizard option to begin the assisted configuration process. This simple wizard fully automates the configuration of Convea hosting and support services. The following section covers each step in greater detail.

iii. Configuring Convea for use with the Configuration Wizard

Once the Configuration Wizard has loaded, click next to begin.

Step1: Locating the installation and data folders.

The wizard needs to be told where you just installed Convea on your machine. Firstly, click the top folder button to launch the Browse for Folder dialog, and then navigate to the folder where Convea was installed. The second box needs to know where you want your Convea file areas to be created. The file areas are used for the storage of data Convea generates through normal use, such as files and attachments. Again, this folder can be located anywhere, simply click the second folder button to launch the folder selector and navigate to a folder of your choice. To create a new folder, click the New Folder button in the Browse for Folder dialog.

When you have finished selecting your folders, click the Next button.

If you are receiving a run-time error when clicking the folder buttons see the section on Special Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 2003 Server users.

Step 2: Configuring IIS Virtual Directories and Permissions

The wizard will now attempt to configure Internet Information Services. This process involves the creation of two Virtual Directories pointing to your Convea installation folder and Convea file areas. The correct permissions and operating settings will also be applied. The drop down list will show a list of existing web sites on your server, if you would like the virtual directories to be created under a site other than the Default Web Site, select it here. When you are ready, click the Configure IIS button.

If you are re-running the wizard to correct or update an earlier installation you can choose to skip this step by checking the Skip IIS configuration and continue to next step option.

This step also creates the physical Convea file folders inside the folder you selected in the previous step. Do not skip this step if these folders have not yet been created.

To continue to the next step, click the Next button.

Step 3: Configuring E-Mail and SMTP Services

This step configures the Convea Mail Service. The Mail Service runs in the background (as a Windows Service) and is responsible for both internal and external mail. If you do not intend to use Convea E-Mail, simply click the Next button to proceed. If you are going to use the mail services, complete this section taking note of the parameter descriptions that follow:

E-Mail Service Interval: This is the frequency at which the service will check for incoming mail and send all queued outgoing mail. The default interval is 60 seconds, although you can change this value to whatever you choose.
Max Defer Time: In the event of a serious error whilst retrieving mail from a POP account Convea will suspend the POP account for an amount of time that multiplies each time it detects an error. For example, the first time an error occurs Convea will set a defer time of 10 minutes before it attempts to retrieve mail on the account. For each subsequent error the defer time is doubled until it reaches the Max Defer Time, at which point the account is disabled and flagged as invalid. The default value is 1440 minutes (24 hours), which we recommend you use.
SMTP Server Name: To send outgoing mail Convea needs to connect to an SMTP Server. You can use the IIS SMTP Server, or any server of your choice. In the SMTP Server Name box, enter either the machine (NETBIOS) name of your SMTP Server, e.g.. MSERVER, a localhost reference (default), or an I. P. address. Whenever the SMTP server is running on a local network we recommend using the machine name first.
Port: The default STMP port is 25. If your is different enter the port value in this box.
Username / Password: If your SMTP Server is setup to require a username and password, enter them in the appropriate boxes, otherwise leave them blank.

To continue to the next step, click the Next button.

Step 4: Database connection information.

In this step the Configuration Wizard will request your MySQL Server connection details - please ensure you have MySQL installed and running before continuing. If you have just installed MySQL you can leave most settings as is and continue to the next step after hitting the Test button and receiving a successful notification. For users with an existing MySQL Server, either installed locally or available remotely, simply enter the connection details to any database account with GRANT privileges.

Driver: The name of the MySQL ODBC Driver.
Server I. P. Enter the I. P. address of the server hosting the MySQL database. If MySQL is installed locally you can click the 'Use Local' button to obtain the local obtain I. P. address.
Port: The default MySQL port is 3306. If yours is different enter the port number in this box.
Username / Password You will need to supply the username and password for an account with GRANT privileges. If you have just installed MySQL, use the default settings of Username: root, with an empty password field. GRANT privileges must be available as Convea will create its own user account and setup up permissions accordingly.

When you have finished entering your database details you must click the large 'Test' button to validate the connection before continuing. If a successful connection is established you can proceed to the next step. If the connection fails you must resolve your connection issues before the wizard will allow you to continue.

Convea ships with an easy to use MySQL front end (GUI) called MySQL Front. If you have no MySQL tools we recommend you install this program to investigate any database issues that may arise. The install package can be found in the _install/Support Tools folder where you installed Convea.

If your connection was successful, click the Next button.

Step 5: Database Creation

In this step Convea will create and populate its master database. As part of the creation process the Convea Administrator account is created and will need a valid e-mail address. Do not enter a fake address. The administrator e-mail you supply is used for all end-user communication to you, the site administrator, as well as providing e-mail functionality to the administrator account. Furthermore, in the event that you, the administrator, forget your login information, if no valid e-mail is supplied here your account details will not be retrievable. This e-mail address nor any other information you supply is relayed to Convea. To continue, just click the Create Database button.

If you have already created the Convea database in a previous installation you can check the "Skip database creation" box.

If the database creation is successful, click the Next button.

Convea Configuration should now be complete. The final page of the wizard displays a possible login URL to your new Convea site. You can optionally check the Launch Convea box to have the wizard automatically launch Internet Explorer into your new installation. In the event of a failed configuration you can re-run this wizard at any time, skipping the process that have already been completed successfully.

When accessing Convea for the first time the only valid user account is the administrators. To login, use the username of: administrator, and the password is: password. You should change your password after a successful login through the Preferences modules.

3. Special Instructions for Windows NT and Windows 2003 Server Users

i. Windows NT

The Convea Configuration Wizard makes calls to SHELL32.DLL that may not be supported by your version of this DLL. Most versions of NT 4 ship with the standard version 4 of SHELL32.DLL, whereas the version you need to run the wizard is version 4.71.

The process of obtaining this DLL is fairly straightforward - you need the Internet Explorer Administration Kit. See the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;254919 as well as http://bluec.webserwer.pl/w95nt.php for instructions on how to obtain the updated DLL.

ii. Windows 2003 Server

The most common problem with Windows 2003 Server is the IIS default documents extensions are configured for ASP.net and not ASP classic. You can check if your server is correctly configured by launching Internet Services Manager ( Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Services Manager ). Right click on the website where Convea is hosted, select Properties, click the Documents tab, and in the Enable Default Document section, check that a filetype of "default.asp" exists. If it does, you should be fine - if not, click the Add button and enter "default.asp" as a new document type (without the quotes)

Troubleshooting 1157 and 126 ODBC Errors

If you get an error like this make sure all of the ODBC driver files have been correctly installed. If not, get the DLL only release (without the installer) and manually copy these files into your Windows/System32 folder.

4. Upgrade from version 5.0 or 5.1

If you already have a running installation of Convea you can easily perform the 5.2 upgrade without running the installer. In your 5.2 distribution, locate a .zip file named Convea52Patch.zip and simply unzip the contents into you Convea Core folder. No further modifications are required.
